In his welcome interview, Verbruggen talks about his qualities. "The club is fantastic, and the people working there as well, but what I find most beautiful is how they played last season. I think I fit in well here. Sometimes, I enjoy going for a footballing solution rather than making a save. I have always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet."
Leading up to this transfer, Verbruggen played in the U21 European Championship, where Jan Paul van Hecke was his teammate in the Dutch national team. The center-back had made the move to Brighton three years earlier and could share everything about the English club. "We spent three weeks together in the U21 team, so we had plenty of time to talk about Brighton. He was nothing but positive, which made me even more excited about this move," Verbruggen said.
On Anderlecht's website, Verbruggen speaks of a dream. "I truly had three fantastic years here. I have met wonderful people in a warm environment, and I have always been proud to be part of Anderlecht. This club has provided me with the platform to develop myself, which has allowed me to make this move now. Playing in the Premier League has always been a childhood dream. I also owe it to the club for making this dream come true."
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi acknowledges Verbruggen's qualities. "He is accustomed to playing our style of football, and he will have no problem fitting into our group. He has the potential to become a very important player for our club in the coming years."
Brighton currently has four other goalkeepers under contract with the first team: Robert Sánchez, Jason Steele, Tom McGill, and compatriot Kjell Scherpen. Sánchez and Steele both played in the Premier League last season, while Scherpen was loaned out to Vitesse.
In an interview with VI, Van Hecke previously explained the success behind Brighton, who will be competing in Europe this season.
