It is highly questionable whether the match between FC Lorient and RC Lens scheduled for this Saturday can go ahead. At the moment, there is severe weather in the port city due to storm Ciaran, and the mayor of Lorient is pushing for a cancellation.
This coming Wednesday, PSV is set to face Lens in the Champions League. However, it's quite possible that the French team may get a weekend off. Ciaran is currently sweeping over Brittany, and the damage is mounting in Lorient. Mayor Fabrice Loher considers it irresponsible to let the match between Lorient and Lens proceed.
'Allowing the match to go ahead would not be reasonable. It would even be dangerous,' was recorded by Ouest France. He is concerned about the safety of the fans. 'It would also not be good for both teams to play under these conditions.'
The decision whether the match will indeed be canceled, however, lies with the league management of Ligue 1. Home team Lorient, on the other hand, assumes that the match will be 'simply' played. 'We are not at all aware of the possibility of postponement,' said director Emmanuel Robert. 'We have been in contact with the municipality, and the Ligue 1 sees no reason to postpone the match. The stadium has not suffered any structural damage.'
At the moment, Lens is in second place in the Champions League group with five points. PSV and Sevilla follow with two points each. In the battle for a spot in the top two, and thus for Champions League survival, a victory for PSV on Wednesday is of great importance.
