Tonali risks a multi-year suspension for betting on Milan matches

Last week, Sandro Tonali had to leave the training camp of the Italian national team because he is part of an investigation into illegal gambling practices. In the same week, it emerged that the Italian also bet on AC Milan matches while he was a player there.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who has since been transferred to Newcastle United from the Rossoneri for eighty million euros, is said to have bet on Milan victories or other outcomes in matches he did not play in, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. However, betting on one's own sports matches is particularly risky, as it can be considered an act of sporting misconduct.

If it is proven that Tonali indeed bet on his own matches with the Italian powerhouse, he faces a suspension of up to four years. The Italian press also reports that the fifteen-time international will be suspended for at least a year, despite the fact that he has pledged full cooperation with the investigation and has admitted to struggling with a gambling addiction.

Earlier, it was also revealed that Nicolò Fagioli was involved in the gambling practices. The 22-year-old Juventus midfielder has already struck a deal with the Italian prosecutor, saving him from a full year's suspension, and he will be sidelined for seven months. However, Fagioli must meet various conditions.
