PSG sets painful record with many missed chances

Ultimately, Paris Saint-Germain needed a dubious penalty from Kylian Mbappé to scrape a draw in their Champions League match against Newcastle United. The Parisians created a statistical first with their many missed opportunities.

Since Opta started tracking expected goal data in the 2013/14 Champions League season, no club has underperformed as much as PSG against Newcastle.

Based on the quantity and quality of their goal attempts, the French top club should have scored four times instead of just once. The initial xG (expected goals) was 4.47, and after a revision, it even reached 4.54.

Particularly, young talent Bradley Barcola and Mbappé missed opportunities in the match against the Premier League's high-flyer. "It's frustrating, because we dominated from beginning to end. We had so many chances, we really should have won easily," the latter observed after the draw, speaking to Canal Plus Foot.

With this point, PSG still has its fate in its own hands: an away victory over the already qualified Borussia Dortmund will be enough for a place in the last sixteen.
