Last summer, Manchester United shelled out tens of millions of euros for the arrival of André Onana. The Cameroonian had made a significant impact at Internazionale the previous season, and expectations for his transfer to the Premier League were consequently very high.
Onana left Ajax on a free transfer for Internazionale in the summer of 2022. Due to his doping suspension and contract issues, the Cameroonian had hardly featured in his last two seasons in Amsterdam, and people had almost forgotten how well he could play.
However, the move to Internazionale worked out well for him. Onana became a key player in the team that would reach the Champions League final. Onana's first season in Italy left him wanting more, but due to financial issues at Internazionale, he was soon linked with a transfer to England.
Onana was linked with Chelsea, but it was ultimately Manchester United that secured his signature. As mentioned above, however, the goalkeeper has not been able to convince at his new club. While Onana regularly kept his goal clean in Italy, he has conceded 35 goals in the Manchester United shirt – eighteen times in the Premier League and a notable fourteen times in five Champions League matches.
It is not surprising, then, that Keane labels Onana as the 'biggest disappointment' so far. 'I think Manchester United was wise to part ways with David de Gea, but now they have someone between the posts who is struggling,' says the former United player in conversation with The Sun.
Onana is not the only goalkeeper at a top English club facing difficulties. Jamie Carragher also sees little conviction in David Raya at Arsenal. 'The biggest disappointments in the Premier League so far this season are the goalkeepers of Manchester United and Arsenal: Onana and Raya,' says the Liverpool icon. 'They are performing poorly after arriving as 'improvements' compared to the previous goalkeepers. It has remained almost the same or even regressed since their arrival.'
