Frenkie de Jong was forced to exit due to injury on Saturday night at FC Barcelona. The midfielder had to leave the field during the first half of the match at FC Barcelona's home game against Celta de Vigo. The Dutchman was dealing with ankle problems and wanted to continue playing but had to be substituted after just over half an hour. Gavi replaced him, and this is bad news for Ronald Koeman.
The national team coach has already faced a lot of injury problems in the early international periods under his leadership, but so far, Frenkie de Jong has always remained unscathed.
The midfielder is one of the key players in Koeman's Dutch national team and was, therefore, naturally included in the provisional squad for the matches against Greece and France. Especially the first match is crucial in the context of the European Championship qualification campaign for the Dutch national team.
Whether Frenkie will miss those matches altogether is not yet known. The Dutchman appeared to be on the field with ankle issues, and although he tried for a while, after just over half an hour, he sent a pass, and the pain returned, prompting him to be substituted. It's also a significant setback for Xavi because the coach can't count on the still-injured Pedri. Furthermore, FC Barcelona was trailing Celta de Vigo 0-1 at home.
