Milner signs with Brighton and could chase Premier League record

Brighton & Hove Albion has announced the arrival of James Milner. The Seagulls have acquired the 37-year-old midfielder on a free transfer from Liverpool, where he spent eight years under contract. Recently, Alexis Mac Allister went in the opposite direction.

Milner's move had been in the air for a long time, and both clubs confirmed the transfer on Wednesday through official channels. Brighton, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, had previously secured João Pedro for €34 million. That marked a record transfer for the employers of Joël Veltman and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Between 2015 and last season, Milner played 332 official matches for Liverpool, winning the Champions League (2018/19) and the Premier League (2019/20) with The Reds. The veteran midfielder previously played for Leeds United, Swindon Town (on loan), Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Manchester City.

Milner currently ranks third on the list of players with the most Premier League appearances, with 619 matches. He is only behind Gareth Barry (652) and Ryan Giggs (632). Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is particularly delighted with Milner's arrival. "He is an excellent addition. I am confident he will help take us to an even higher level," said the Italian on Brighton's official club website. Brighton will compete in the Europa League next season.
