'Manchester United doesn't need a new number one.'

Manchester United would do well to continue with David de Gea, according to Kasper Schmeichel. The club already has a 'top goalkeeper' in the Spaniard, while a replacement would cost a lot of money.

Manchester United and De Gea are in talks to extend his expiring contract, but there is no white smoke yet. Schmeichel would know what to do if he had a say. 'They have an incredible goalkeeper and servant in the house,' said the current OGC Nice goalkeeper at Sky Sports. 'It's an incredible achievement to play for the same club for twelve years.'

Although De Gea has always been trusted, there has also been regular criticism. This season was no different, as he made the occasional mistake. 'He has been asked to play in a completely different way than he is used to this season,' says Schmeichel. 'People often see the things that go wrong, but there are also a lot of things that go right. There has never been any discussion about his goalkeeping qualities; it's almost scandalous how good he is.'

'If Manchester United had to replace him, you would pay around sixty million pounds. They already have a world-class goalkeeper who wants to stay, so I think they will come to an agreement with him. They don't need a new number one,' says the former goalkeeper of Leicester City, among others.

If that does not work out, Manchester United also has another goalkeeper under contract with Dean Henderson. Henderson is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest and is still contracted to Old Trafford until the summer of 2025."
