According to the French quality newspaper Le Monde, the French judiciary is investigating whether there was tampering in the awarding of the Ballon d'Or in 2021. Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball at that time, but there is a possibility that it might be taken away from him.

Pascal Ferré, oud-hoofdredacteur van France Football, zou van PSG cadeaus hebben gekregen, terwijl voormalig hoofd communicatie Jean-Martial Ribes van PSG eerder aangeklaagd is wegens 'corruptie en beïnvloeding'. Hij zou gelobbyd hebben om Messi de Gouden Bal te laten winnen. Ook kreeg hij wedstrijdkaartjes en werden de reis- en verblijfkosten tijdens het WK voor clubteams in Qatar vergoed.
Het winnen van de Gouden Bal levert clubs veel positieve aandacht op. In het geval van PSG was dat niet anders, daarom kwam het de club niet slecht uit dat Messi tegen Kylian Mbappé speelde in de finale van het WK: beiden speelden destijds voor PSG. Nu blijkt dat er mogelijk gesjoemeld is met het aantal stemmen op Messi in 2021. Om de Ballon d'Or-winst van toen was veel te doen, omdat velen vonden dat Robert Lewandowski de prijs had moeten winnen en Messi dat seizoen helemaal niet zo goed was.
De Franse justitie stuitte per toeval op de Messi-zaak, want aanvankelijk werd mogelijke belastingontduiking onderzocht bij de omstreden transfer van Neymar naar PSG. Winning the Golden Ball brings a lot of positive attention to clubs.
