Erling Haaland has equalled Mohamed Salah's Premier League goal record. The Norwegian striker of Manchester City scored twice in the 3-1 home win against Leicester City, bringing his total this season to 32 goals in the English competition.
Salah scored 32 times for Liverpool in the 2017-2018 season, which was a record since the Premier League has consisted of twenty clubs.
Previously, the Premier League had 22 clubs. Andy Cole and Alan Shearer both scored 34 goals in a season with 42 games, four more games than now. Cole did it in 1993-1994 for Newcastle United, while Shearer did it a season later for Blackburn Rovers.
8 more games
Haaland has eight more matches to surpass Cole and Shearer's achievement. The Norwegian scored his 32 goals in 28 matches. He was substituted at halftime by coach Pep Guardiola against Leicester City, with an eye on the return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Bayern Munich. Haaland converted a penalty in the 13th minute and scored again shortly afterwards on an assist from Kevin De Bruyne.
John Stones, who had opened the score in the 5th minute, did not return to the field after halftime. Dutch international Nathan Aké did not even have to come into action. From the bench, he saw Kelechi Iheanacho score a consolation goal for Leicester City in the uneventful second half.
