The Comoros caused a huge upset in the World Cup qualification on Tuesday by defeating Ghana. A goal by Myziane Maolida just before half-time broke The Black Stars.
At Comoros, Sparta Rotterdam defender Saïd Bakari and Yacine Bourhane (formerly of Go Ahead Eagles) played the full ninety minutes. Ghana, which a year ago made an appearance at the World Cup in Qatar and was eliminated in the first round, initially kept Mohammed Kudus on the bench. The former Ajax player came on right after halftime, but he too could not make a difference.
Comoros leads Group I of the African qualification with six points from two matches, three more than Ghana. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the next phase, while the runner-up still has a chance through the playoffs.
In early 2022, Comoros caused a stir by reaching the round of 16 in the African Cup of Nations tournament. Cameroon was too strong then with a 2-1 victory.
Cameroon also suffers a setback
Speaking of Cameroon: The Indomitable Lions also failed to impress in the World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday. The 1990 World Cup quarterfinalist drew 1-1 against Libya. The injured Andre Onana was replaced by Fabrice Ondoa. Cameroon had previously won 3-0 against Mauritius.
