Getafe questions red card for Greenwood: 'He didn't insult anyone'

Mason Greenwood was unjustly sent off on Tuesday night, according to Getafe coach José Bordalás. The English forward is said to have insulted referee Jorge Figueroa Vázquez, but there is confusion about what Greenwood exactly said.

The unfortunate turn of events unfolded for Getafe in the La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano, where they concluded the home fixture with only nine players on the field.

In addition to Greenwood, striker Juanmi Latasa also received a red card, and further complications arose when right-back Damián Suárez was handed a red card after his substitution. The focus of much controversy centered around Greenwood's expulsion, with the on-loan Manchester United forward allegedly being ejected five minutes into the second half for insulting the match officials.

As per the match report, it was reported by Spanish media that Greenwood uttered "fck you" to the referee. However, a contrasting narrative emerges from the 22-year-old left-footer. José Bordalás, the Getafe coach, came to Greenwood's defense during the subsequent press conference, stating, 'He's a good boy, he doesn't speak Spanish. He told me he said "don't fck with me." That's it.' Bordalás emphatically asserted that Greenwood did not insult anyone and suggested that the entire incident was exaggerated.

Support for Bordalás's account comes from Getafe substitute Juan Iglesias, who challenges observers to provide footage proving Greenwood's alleged insult to the referee. He even goes on to offer a dinner invitation to those who can substantiate the claim. However, if the Spanish Football Federation opts to uphold the version presented by the match officials, Greenwood could face a suspension of up to four matches, as reported by Spanish media.

This development is particularly disheartening for Getafe, considering Greenwood's growing impact and glimpses of his footballing prowess during the first half of the season. Despite Bordalás attempting to maintain a diplomatic stance, expressing displeasure with the referee's performance, he acknowledged the surprising abundance of cards and exclusions in a match that, by his account, was not characterized by excessive rough play.
