Shakhtar Donetsk will play their home games in the upcoming 2024/25 Champions League at Schalke 04's stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the two clubs announced on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian champions will host their four home games out of a total of eight group stage matches in the new Champions League format at the Arena AufSchalke, which has a capacity of 62,000 spectators. This stadium, known for its modern facilities and vibrant atmosphere, will provide Shakhtar with a prestigious venue to compete at the highest level of European football.
The agreement between the two clubs also stipulates that the Ukrainian team will play their home games in Gelsenkirchen during the knockout stage, should they qualify for the round of 16 of the competition. This continuity in venue is aimed at ensuring a stable and familiar environment for the players and fans alike as the tournament progresses.
The team from Donetsk has not played home games in Ukraine since the country was invaded by Russia in 2022. Shakhtar had to relocate their international games from Ukraine, where they have not played in Donetsk since 2014 due to the region being part of the ongoing conflict, claimed by pro-Russian separatists. This long-standing conflict has forced the club to adapt continuously, seeking venues that can ensure the safety and security of players, staff, and fans while still enabling the team to compete at the highest levels.
