Shakhtar Donetsk will play their home games in the upcoming 2024/25 Champions League at Schalke 04's stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the two clubs announced on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian champions will host their four home games out of a total of eight group stage matches in the new Champions League format at the Arena AufSchalke, which has a capacity of 62,000 spectators. This stadium, known for its modern facilities and vibrant atmosphere, will provide Shakhtar with a prestigious venue to compete at the highest level of European football.

The agreement between the two clubs also stipulates that the Ukrainian team will play their home games in Gelsenkirchen during the knockout stage, should they qualify for the round of 16 of the competition. This continuity in venue is aimed at ensuring a stable and familiar environment for the players and fans alike as the tournament progresses.

The team from Donetsk has not played home games in Ukraine since the country was invaded by Russia in 2022. Their matches in the last two editions were first held in Warsaw and then, last season, in Hamburg. These relocations have been part of Shakhtar's ongoing efforts to maintain competitive football amid the challenging circumstances back home.

"We are pleased to host our Champions League games in one of the best stadiums in Germany. The positive experience from last season showed that Shakhtar has strong support from fans in this country both locals and Ukrainian refugees," explained Serhii Palkin, the club's CEO. The support from the Ukrainian diaspora and local fans has been crucial in providing the team with a semblance of home advantage despite the displacement.

Shakhtar had to relocate their international games from Ukraine, where they have not played in Donetsk since 2014 due to the region being part of the ongoing conflict, claimed by pro-Russian separatists. This long-standing conflict has forced the club to adapt continuously, seeking venues that can ensure the safety and security of players, staff, and fans while still enabling the team to compete at the highest levels.

The move to Gelsenkirchen is seen as a strategic choice, leveraging the excellent infrastructure and supportive local community. Arena AufSchalke's state-of-the-art facilities will not only provide a top-tier footballing environment but also a symbolic haven for Shakhtar's mission to continue their footballing journey despite the adversities faced in their homeland.

As the 2024/25 Champions League season approaches, Shakhtar Donetsk remains committed to delivering strong performances and making a significant impact in the tournament. The club's resilience and determination, bolstered by the support of their fans in Germany, will be key factors as they strive to achieve success on Europe's grandest stage.
