Reece James, captain of Chelsea, spoke for the first time this Friday about the controversy surrounding former Benfica player Enzo Fernández, who faced disciplinary action from the club after recording a video showing racist chants by the Argentine national team against their French counterparts following their Copa América victory this summer. The chants were directed at the French team that won the 2018 World Cup.

In an interview with ESPN, the English right-back and teammate of the Argentine midfielder highlighted that Enzo publicly apologized as soon as the video went viral. However, James admitted that the incident could negatively impact the atmosphere in the Blues' locker room, which includes French players, some of whom have already unfollowed Enzo on social media.

"Of course. There's always the factor of people not feeling comfortable when an issue arises. But until the day comes when everyone is together in a room, I don't know, but I hope things can be resolved smoothly and we can move forward with the season," he commented.

"I spoke with him a little [about the case], but it was difficult because we were on different schedules. We only had a brief conversation about his perspective on the matter. He tried to explain his situation and how things happened. It's a very difficult situation; there's no room for racism or discrimination in football. I think he quickly raised his hands, admitted he was wrong, and apologized to his teammates, the club, and the rest of the people who were offended. I think that was the best thing he could have done in that situation," he added.

James's comments reflect a broader concern within the club about maintaining team harmony and ensuring that such incidents do not derail their season. The Chelsea captain's leadership and willingness to address the issue head-on are crucial in fostering a supportive environment for all players.

It should be noted that Enzo Maresca, the new coach of Chelsea, assured a few days ago that Enzo Fernández's return to the club "will not be a problem." Maresca emphasized the importance of moving past the incident and focusing on the upcoming challenges. He expressed confidence in Fernández's professionalism and commitment to the team.

The incident has sparked discussions about the role of athletes as public figures and the impact of their actions off the field. Fernández's prompt apology and acceptance of responsibility are seen as steps in the right direction, but the situation underscores the ongoing need for education and awareness around issues of racism and discrimination in sports.

As Chelsea prepares for the new season, the club's management and coaching staff will be working to ensure that the locker room remains united and focused on their goals. The support from teammates and the leadership from figures like Reece James will be vital in navigating this challenging period and maintaining a positive team dynamic.
