Barkley returns to the Premier League after a year in France

Ross Barkley is set to play on the English fields again. The midfielder had been a free agent since his departure from OGC Nice and has now committed to Premier League debutant Luton Town.

For Barkley, Luton will be the sixth English club he will play for. The now 29-year-old midfielder was developed at Everton, loaned to Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, and sold to Chelsea in January 2018. Chelsea further loaned Barkley to Aston Villa before the 33-time English international left his homeland.

In the past season, Barkley played 27 matches in Ligue 1 as a player for OGC Nice. He appeared more often as a substitute than as a starter. After a year in France, the midfielder is now returning to England, where he will play for Luton Town. The club has not disclosed on their official website how many years Barkley has signed for.

"It's a huge motivation for me to return to the Premier League," Barkley is quoted as saying. "I'm still relatively young and haven't played as much in the past few years as I would have liked. But I've conserved a lot of energy and taken good care of myself, so it's fantastic for me to be here now. I still have a lot to show."

Barkley will be a teammate of Tahith Chong at Luton Town. Luton Town begins its Premier League journey on Saturday with an away match against Brighton & Hove Albion."
