Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that Tottenham Hotspur will be the opponent in the battle for the Trofeu Joan Gamper, a match with which Barça has been heralding each new season since 1966. The match will be played at the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys.
Barcelona will host Tottenham on Tuesday, August 8th, at their temporary residence on the Montjuïc mountain in Barcelona. The Catalans will play their home matches there this upcoming season because Camp Nou is undergoing a major renovation.
The champions of Spain will fly to the United States for the Trofeu Joan Gamper battle and a series of friendly matches. In the US, matches are planned with Juventus, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. The new season in La Liga begins for Barça with an away match at Getafe on August 13th.
Last August, the Mexican team UNAM was the opponent in the traditional season opener for the Catalan powerhouse. Frenkie de Jong was then one of the goal scorers in the 6-0 victory. The last Dutch club that Barcelona invited for the Trofeu Joan Gamper was PSV in 2000. The Eindhoven team lost 2-1 at Camp Nou then.
